Teaching Interests

Prosthodontics is the dental specialty focused on the care of patients with complex oral healthcare needs, including those with extensive restorative requirements, high esthetic demands, tooth loss, and histories of cancer, trauma, or congenital and developmental conditions. Our role is to restore function and appearance while treating patients as individuals, often leading to long-term care relationships.

My teaching philosophy reflects this patient-centered approach. I emphasize structure through clear clinical frameworks, step-based guidance, and regular progress reviews, while also prioritizing individualized treatment planning and problem solving. I recognize that residents have different learning styles and provide a balance of supervision and independence to support their professional growth.

Case-based learning and chairside discussion are central to graduate prosthodontic education, encouraging critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and confidence in decision-making. My goal is for residents to practice professionally, deliver the highest level of patient care, and be prepared to pursue board certification. I am also committed to strengthening the use of Evidence-Based Dentistry across clinical care, teaching, and scholarly activity.

Research Interests

My research background integrates formal training in dental biomaterials with applied research leadership at the U.S. Army Dental and Trauma Research Detachment, where I served as Commander during my final three years. The Detachment was the largest military dental research organization in the world, with more than 60 personnel and an annual budget of $4–6 million. My scholarly work spans digital dentistry, ceramics, occlusion, metals, and polymers, reflecting the rapidly evolving nature of prosthodontics. As a specialty centered on engineered substitutes for damaged or missing biological tissues, prosthodontics requires rigorous materials science and clinical validation. I have authored or co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts in the scientific literature.
